Sheltered Oyster Company
In 2015, Peter Johnson was reading more and more about Oysters after becoming a scallop farmer. He saw an opportunity to get involved and give back at the same time. He was really amazed at how good oyster farming is for the bays and harbors. Oysters are the answer to all the problems our bays and harbors have had for so many years. An adult oyster can filter 50 gallons of water a day. This opportunity was a way to not only possibly make a little money, but give back to the environment. Peter spent his first year as a farmer, while waiting on applications, volunteering as much as he could with many amazing people at the Marine Unit at Cornell Cooperative in Southold. The people who have been working on bringing back the scallops and oysters for decades. Fast forward to September 2018, Peter is harvesting oysters he grew from babies -- aka 'Sheltered Rocks'.
